Free Crochet Face Mask Pattern

Writer's picture: Hooked by DanielleHooked by Danielle

With everything happening today, I decided to make a free crochet face mask. I figured a lot of us could use a free pattern, as many of us are out of work. I mean who can't appreciate something free? I can speak for myself, I know that I am thankful. Although I have modified my schedule and have forgone payments until further notice, I still venture out to work. I am a psychiatric rehabilitation counselor who works with individuals with autism. I have gone to check on a few of my clients and have started to wear a mask to ensure their safety and my own. I personally don't like the way that the mask looks. I felt it would look a little less threatening if I placed something cute over it. This crochet pattern was created to go over a thin medical grade mask.

This pattern can be modified to meet your needs. Feel free to modify it to meet your anatomy. You can also modify it to allow for a filter. I have seen come patterns where a designer had decided to make a pocket on the inside of the mask for a filter. You could do this with fabric. I've seen some cut up a cotton t-shirt when they do not have fabric available. Instead of the straps that I've placed in the pattern, I've seen people use elastic.

Feel free to make this comfortable for you. I just wanted to share my pattern with others.

If you do use the pattern, can you please post a picture on Instagram, and tag me @drromanello, so that I can see your creations?

The yarn that I used for this project is made out of natural fibers. This just what I have in my stash. You honestly have to work with what you can. I recommend using a yarn that is machine washable. I have seen others recommend using a cotton yarn. If I had cotton yarn at home, I probably would have used that. But in times like this, you have to work with what you have.

The Pattern

Materials

worsted weight yarn

5.5mm crochet hook

tapestry needle

scissors

Abbreviation

BLO back loop only

ch chain

hdc half double crochet

RS right side

sc single crochet

sl st slip stitch

st stitch(s)

WS wrong side

Important note:

1. Remember to sc or hdc (depending on the row you're on) into both loops when starting and ending your row. Every stitch in between those two, unless otherwise stated will be in the BLO. This gives the pattern it's ridged look.

2. Do not forget to keep count of your stitches.

Ch 25

1: beginning with the second chain from your hook hdc along your chain.

2: 1 sc into both loops of the hdc below, sc into the BLO for the next 8 sts, 6 hdc BLO, 8 sc BLO, 1 sc into both loops of the last hdc below. Ch 2, turn. 3: hdc into both loops of the first st, hdc BLO until last st, in last st place hdc into both loops of stitch below. Ch 1, turn.

4 - 11: repeat rows 2-3 respectively.

From this point you will be working into both loops of the st below

12: [sc, ch1, sc], sc until you have 1 st left in the row, [sc, ch1, sc] into the last stitch. Now sc evenly along the remainder of the mask, making sure to work [sc, 1 ch, sc] into the corners. Sl st into the very first sc.

Bind off here if you do not wish to add the border, and go down to the ear loops. If you wish to continue onto the border, please keep a loop on your hook.

Optional Border.

The RS of your work should be facing you. You will be working the reverse sc st all the way around your work, without turning it. When you get to the corner, skip the extra sc that we made previously. This will make it look a little smoother at the corners. Sl st and bind off.

Ear loops.

With the WS of the work facing you, join your yarn into a corner, ch 15 and slip stitch into the opposite corner along the short side. Bind off. Do the same for the other side. Bind off.

Weave your ends.

Remember, you can modify this pattern to fit your anatomy. Its a simple pattern that can also be made smaller if you want to make one for a child.

Please don't forget to add your photos to Instagram so that I can see your creations. With everything happening today, I will find solace in seeing what you are making in your quarantine times.

Thank you for making with me.

Be well and stay safe.

Danielle
